You Don't Have Time for Facebook? Really?

Recently and numerous times I've had friends say to me that "I don't have time to Facebook", or "I don't need to Facebook. I have enough friends". I listen politely and nod as I don't want to come off as the crazy Facebook advocate, because while I'm on Facebook I don't consider myself a fanatic.

Then in their next breath, these friends complain on how they have so little time, they hate talking on the phone, they don't know what is up with their sister cause they haven't had time to block out time to call, yada, yada, whine, whine...and then I say...

"Facebook would allow you to keep in touch with those people within 10 minutes a day. Why don't you open an account, it will become so easy to keep up with what people are doing, you don't need to be on that long, just post to your wall a couple of sentences, and you'll be able to keep up to date on what people are doing, see photos, see videos, etc." While I haven't converted anyone instantaneously, most at least admit they have to look into it.

The perception is that Facebook is a timewaster. I don't mean to sound like a Facebook Guru, but I have really learned to appreciate the time saving features of Facebook. While our kids may be obsessed with being on 24/7 to stay incessantly connected, I as a busy professional mom use it sparingly to save time! Go figure—how's that you say?

Well I post my one to two sentences a day and then I view my wall. I consider it like my personal AP wire service, Bloomberg wire, or stock market ticker. I look at my wall one to two times a day and voila I am caught up in with my friend circle in about 10 minutes. It's a real time saver cause now I don't have to call my friend to see how her vacation went. I can view a few of her photos, and then comment quickly "so glad you had a great time in Italy. Let's catch up soon." I look like a great friend and a hero for paying attention. I don't have to write a long e-mail or pick up the phone. I feel like a cheater.

It's especially great for your outer circle of friends who are really more acquaintances and don't rate a phone call. I have a few cousins that I'm not that close to. I would never call or e-mail them but we are connected by Facebook and by looking at my wall I am in the loop with very little effort.

People my age are really missing the boat when evaluating whether they should be on Facebook! I now get annoyed when my close friends are still not on because I have to remember to call or e-mail and its really a pain to backtrack get them in my loop. I just assume they know what's going on in my life. They should know that I went to Asheville for my vacation cause it's already posted!
